Antigua's Boggy Peak to be Renamed Mount Obama
Filed in archive Latin News on January 21, 2009
The tiny Caribbean nation of Antigua announced plans today to rename its tallest Mount peak after the new U.S. President.
Boggy Peak, if the plan goes through, would be renamed "Mount Obama" on President Obama's birthday this year - August 4th. Antigua's Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer first announced the plan back in November when Obama was elected. The date of the change was revealed today.
Spencer said he joined "people of color all over the world, and indeed all people" in celebrating Obama's inauguration. Boggy Peak rises 1,300 feet (396 meters) over Antigua's southern point and is popular with hikers.
