Daisy Fuentes in Fitness Magazine's September Cover - She Talks About Latin Women, Body Image and Curves
Filed in archive Latin Issues , Latin News on August 9, 2007
Daisy Fuentes will appear in Fitness magazine's September cover. She is the first Mind, Body, Spirit Superstar, which was created to generate awareness of top women's health causes and work to promote change.
Each month, a celebrity will partner with Fitness to raise visibility of a cause, support a charity and provide consumers with crucial information about changing their health. Daisy works for Girls On the Run, a non-profit prevention program that encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running.
I believe that Latin women, because of our curvaceous body structure, suffer a lot, and feel a lot of pressure to be skinny. It's always nice to see programs and campaigns working for women's self-esteem instead of against it.
Fitness' inaugural Mind, Body, Spirit Superstar Daisy Fuentes, former model and Cuban-born TV personality talks about her body confidence, and how to reset the dial on what America calls beautiful.
Here are some excerpts from the interview (on newsstands August 14th):
About celebrity role models:
"It takes someone as confident as Jennifer Lopez to turn a body part that's often considered a flaw into something hot."
About Hispanic women's pressure to feel thin:
"There's a part of you that really wants to embrace your curves, then there's society saying no one likes curves."
About whether Hispanic Body image will change in five years:
"I like the multicultural celebration of body image that is going on now. [I'm happy] that we're all starting to see how beauty shines through no matter what you look like. I'm also a big supporter of charities that boost girls' self-esteem."
About her own curves:
"When I was younger, I used to worry about it all the time. Now I'm know that I'm doing the best I can. I don't care about the criticism."
Her confidence advice for other women:
"Don't be so hard on yourself. But, if you don't like something about your body, change it. Eat healthy and work out."
I agree with most of her thoughts, and definitely have a thing or two to say about this. Let me elaborate a little more and I'll get back to you. :)
