How to be a Good Spokeswoman of Latin Culture

How much do you know about your heritage? Are you familiarized with your origins? Do you represent your country with grace and dignity? In order to accomplish that, there is some basic knowledge you should get covered:
1 - Food
Food is one of the most important elements of culture. Each pueblo has it's own cooking, shaped and influenced by geography, religion, history and weather. You should learn (if you haven't yet) to cook two traditional dishes - dulce y salado - and a national drink or beverage.
2 - Music
There are several ways you can manage this area. Know a few songs of typical music; if you have a good voice, learn to sing them; if you know how to play a musical instrument, all the better! "Musically challenged"? Buy CD's and DVD's to enjoy and share with your friends. You can also practice traditional dances or choreographies; imagine how fun could it be to show your skills in a special occasion, dressed in a traditional outfit.
3 - Literature
Read good books and learn a few poems by national writers. You should also be able to tell at least one national legend or myth, along with its meaning or symbolism, and how it's related with the country's culture.
4 - History
I'm not talking about a Major in History, just some basics. Which kind of natives where there before colonization
? What happened to them? Which where the most important events on the country's history? Invasions? War? Dictatorship? Which are the biggest problems the country is facing today? Human rights issues? Poverty? Violence, drugs, corruption?
5 - Geography and Tourism
How's the weather there? What's the best time of the year to go on vacation? Be prepared to share tips about non-touristic destinations, shopping, small towns, good restaurants, and all sort of information travel agencies don't have.
6 - National holidays
Mark them on your calendar, and celebrate! Invite your friends for a typical dinner or party, and tell them what you're celebrating. You can create a tradition, and have a lot of fun, while you keep your connection with your heritage alive.
That's the point of this: always remember who you are, and where you are from. Take pride on it, and be a great speaker for your country. Teaching others about your culture, and sharing your traditions, is the most pacific way of fighting discrimination and racism. I can't think of a better one.
