Is Ricky Martin Nuts Or What?

Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin has declared he wants to start a family next year, and that he would like to adopt, if it's possible, a boy or girl from each continent.

"It's a process that we would begin to create next year, a family of many colors", Martin explained in a press conference in the Coliseum of Puerto Rico, where he will present again the "Black and White" show, this weekend.

Oh boy, I really hate this fetish that celebrities have for adopting kids from different countries and continents. How ridiculous is to choose your sons and daughters based on where they come from? I think they feel like they are helping the poor countries (they always choose kids from third world countries), by adopting ONE kid. Or maybe that's just the message they want to send: "I'm sooo nice, I'm helping an entire country by adopting one of their children." Get out of here!

Ricky Martin also said he doesn't want special treatment in the adopting process: "I want to do it right, I don't want any problems or misunderstandings, because everybody is watching the celebrities, the governments look at us and say: "Let's see how much you can do". They think we (famous people) can manipulate the system to have an easier adoption".

He added that, as a defender of the children's rights, he doesn't want "to preach moral in underclothes". "As an activist I am the first who thinks that the governments must be firm when it's time to adopt a kid, because anyone can come to adopt a child and then exploit them. And I have been working against that for many years", said the singer, who became sponsor of two Indian girls several years ago.

Well, he's right about that, although I'm not sure if adopting children from third world countries as a marketing strategy shouldn't be considered exploitation.

Besides, El Scoop con Todo (where I found about this news) asks the most interesting question: who are "we"?? Martin said "we" are going to start a family next year. We? I can't help thinking that if he had a girlfriend, and they were planning to start a family, adoption wouldn't be the first option, would it? ;)

Anyway, when asked if he would like to get into politics, Ricky confessed that he "has played with the idea", but he believes that he does more from his present scene. "Without being within politics, I believe that we have been able to take solid and effective steps. I can use as an example Mr. Al Gore, who was worried about global heating for many years, and outside the White House his movement has been stronger", he said.

Can you imagine? Ricky Martin as a senator or something like that? The Puerto Rican Arnold Schwarzenegger, that would be funny.
