Jessica Alba - Ashamed of Her Latin Ancesters?
Filed in archive Latin News on June 15, 2007

jessica alba is in big trouble with the Latin community. Apparently, she thinks being Latino is something embarrassing.
Look at what she has said about her Latin roots:
"I've got cousins galore. Mexicans just spread all their seeds. And the women just pop them out."
Ouch! That's not a very nice thing to say about Mexicans, is it? What about this:
"My grandfather was the only Mexican at his college, the only Hispanic person at work and the only one at the all-white country club. He tried to forget his Mexican roots, because he never wanted his kids to be made to feel different in America. He and my grandmother didn't speak Spanish to their children. Now, as a third-generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose."
Everybody is talking about the post from Perez Hilton, where he published this Jessica Alba quotes (and a few others - check the post). He didn't disclose where he got the info; but after a little research, it seems the post is a compilation of scattered comments Jessica made at different times.
Let's say I'm right, and she didn't say all of this brilliant comments all at once. They all went unnoticed, until Hilton gathered them. The logical conclusion is that she actually believes that being Latino is a bad thing, and that you should hide your heritage, if you can. Hilton just shed some light on what she really thinks about Latin heritage and culture.
Don't get me wrong; she has no obligation to consider herself a Latina. She has every right to say she's American, and if she has no pride of her heritage, well, too bad for her. What's wrong, and the reason why she's being criticized among the Latin community, is what's implied in her words: Latin heritage is some kind of handicap or disadvantage that should be hidden from others.
I know it's not easy (specially these days) to be Latino in a country where there's so much racism and prejudice against immigrants. But nobody should let the racist's stupidity and prejudice make them feel like their heritage is something to be ashamed of. So, that's no excuse for saying things like "I have finally cut loose."
Jessica, you don't have to be Latina. Just don't talk about it as if everybody should hide their heritage.

And what she says about Cameron Diaz is true. If people are going to force the Latina label on Jessica, then it should be forced on Cameron. At least be consistent. Interview with Cameron:

Q: Did every Cuban that you met stop you and try to talk to you in Spanish?
CD: Mm-hmm. You know they do, absolutely.
Q: And how do you handle that?
CD: I go, "God, you know, it all sounds so familiar. I know what you're saying, I really do. I just cannot respond to you back in Spanish. I can barely speak English properly." I didn't grow up in a Cuban or Latin community. I grew up in Southern California on the beach, basically. And I'm third generation. I'm of Cuban descent, but I'm American.
Q: That was a question on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire.
CD: Was it really?
Q: Yeah, and they got it wrong. They picked you [as having been born in Puerto Rico], not Ricky Martin.
CD: Well, you see, I just keep people guessing! Put the wrong information out there.
LATINA PARA SIEMPRE!
Also, she faces even more troubles in HOLLYWOOD for being Mexican. Look at what we have been reduced to playing? The cleaning people or ex-cons that have that horrendous Mexican accent.
For me I defend her because I have grown up almost the same way. I'm only 15% french and the rest is mexican. So my aunts. uncles. and parents are all more Mexican as well. However, all of my first cousins are all half white. I never grew up with real Mexican culture except for the food so growing up around white people with no strong Hispanic influence, and my family has been in America for four generations, I don't feel the need to label myself as a Latino, Chicano, cholo, whatever. I personallu don't blame her at all.
Jennifer Pena and Obie Bermudez, Barbara Mori, Gloria Trevi, Gaby Espino and Penelope Menchaca later this month...
I truly do want equality for all CITIZENS of this country, no matter where they came from, but that means every race in this country will have to stop viewing THEMSELVES as different. She said some stupid stereotype stuff, true, but I don't think it was wrong for her to feel American and not Mexican, because she IS an AMERICAN, NOT a MEXICAN.
You can't 'bleach' your skin if you don't have vitiligo, which is what Michael Jackson had.
i must be evil damn me
