Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Filed in archive Latin News on January 12, 2007
The next celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be on Monday January 15, 2007.
This year, Latin leaders will participate in the traditional King march, in Atlanta, from Baker St. to The King Center.
Reverend James Orange, president and coordinator of the March has said that they are trying to focus on a better relationship between African-Americans and Latins. He believes immigration issues affect not only Latinos but also the people from Africa, and dealing with those issues will help both communities.
Jerry González, executive director of GALEO (Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials) says:
"The dream of Martin Luther King had something resonating with him, not only with afro-Americans but with everybody. It's essential that the Latin community acknowledges the fact that the fight for human and civilians rights continues, and that Latinos are part of this; doesn't matter if we are citizens or immigrants. There are challenges that we need to win; and the way to do it is working together, not only within the Latin community but altogether with other communities."
I'm happy. I believe this is a huge step forward, in the battle for human and civilians rights; and an important move towards a better world.
Specially because this movement spreads the message of non-violence. Teaming up with the Latino community will give a stronger voice to Luther's words. Cheers!
