Mexico's Central Highlands
Filed in archive Latin Travel on March 17, 2010
When you talke about visiting Mexico, most people think about beaches and coastal cities: Accapulco, Cozumol, Cancun. But Mexico's Central Highlands are home to some of its more spectacular tourist attractions.
The states of Hidalgo and Guanajuata provide some of Mexico's most scenic and historic attractions. The city of Guanajuato (Guanajuata's capital city) is located in the geographic center of Mexico. It's about three and 3.5 hours north-west of Mexico City. It's colonial archetecture and emphasis on historic preservation help make it one of Mexico's most famous tourist spots. It is a UNESCO world heritage site.
Hidalgo, also in the Central HIgjlands, has a number of mining towns where visitors can see what life was like for mining communities in the 1800's in Mexico.
