I don't know if you're paying attention, but I am: Paula DeAnda is using a pretty unique approach to her personal marketing. Since the beginning, she always seemed to be very close to her fans.

Paula DeAnda's videos on YouTube are not sophisticated or mainstream at all; they are more like the videos a friend brings back from a trip. That gives the watcher a feeling of closeness, of proximity; paula doesn't seem to be a big, distant star; she really is the girl next door.

I believe she's doing a good job in promoting herself and her work. Sure, she also has videos on MTV and
MusicBox; but it's hard not to believe her, when she says she's "all about the fans". And people do like that; everybody dreams about being friends with their idol - or at least with some famous celebrity.

Now, she has launched a very original competition: "When it Was YOU" Video Contest.

She's offering the fans the opportunity of helping her with the music video for her new single, "When It Was Me". Paula is providing her performance of the song; strategically-placed blank spaces are scattered throughout the length of the track. The challenge is to fill the blanks with visuals, so Paula can tell the story of the song.

Paula will rate and choose the top ten video entries. The fans will choose the winning video out of her top ten. The winning entry will have its images included in the final version of Paula's "When It Was Me" video.

Submissions must be received by Monday May 21st, so if you are interested, hurry up to the
"When it Was YOU" Video Contest page, for directions.

I love what Paula said to MTV News about this video: "I want to put that message out there, like the song says, you don't have to have the perfect body shape to be sexy or beautiful. Just be yourself."

I have to tell you, Paula is growing on me! :)

Her official website got recently relaunched, and you can find some interesting things there, like a
free Paula DeAnda MySpace layout. The site is pretty good; although I think there's a couple of issues they should take a look at: the ads (they look odd, it would be better to change their positions), and the comments (apparently there isn't any kind of moderation).
