A project to legalize abortion in Argentina will be presented today in the Argentinian National Congress, during the International Day of Action for Women's Health.
After over a year of debates, 250 social organizations (along with women and human rights organizations) have reached an agreement on the project of legalization of the voluntary interruption of pregnancy.
The project, which will be presented today in the Congress, is supported by many politicians of different parties, as well as by cultural personalities, showbiz celebrities, academic minds and recognized jurists. The project eliminates the abortion from the Penal Code, and legalizes it until the 12 week of pregnancy; for any woman who asks for it, without more requirements than her own will, with her previous informed consent.
In addition, the project grants free access to abortion in public hospitals, private and social clinics until the 12 week of gestation
; it also allows the abortion beyond that time limit in cases of violation, serious fetal malformations and/or life or health risk for the mother.
Judicial authorization will not be required in any case. If the women is under 14 years or is incapacitated, her legal representative will give the consent.
It seems like a lot of Argentinians will face excommunication.
