Rebelde – RBD Barbie Dolls: More Stereotypes for Mexican Girls

Mattel announced today in Mexico the releasing of the "oh so anticipated" collection of Rebelde / RBD barbie dolls.
"Rebelde", one of the most popular Spanish language soap operas, and RBD, the successful and young pop-rock band teamed up with Barbie to create a doll with the image of the three female members of the group: Anahi, Dulce Maria and Maite.
"Barbie always knows what is fashionable and who are the most popular stars anywhere in the world; so, it's wise to be associated with RBD, one of the more popular groups of pop-rock in the world at this moment", said Jamie Wood, vice-president of marketing of Barbie for Mattel Brands. "The Rebelde / RBD Barbie celebrates the pop star career, their fun music and exclusive fashion styles."
As a tribute to their famous fashion inspired by the high school girl's uniform, Mia, Roberta and Lupita (the girls characters in Rebelde) come dressed in their school uniforms: red jacket, necktie and a pleated skirt. At the same time, each doll maintains the personal characteristic and style of the girl who inspired it.
The RBD Barbie dolls will be available in stores on Mexico this month (June 2007), and they will cost approximately USS10.00. The doll will also be available in the rest of Latin America, and some European countries, in a few months.
Another harmful stereotype for Mexican girls. Can you believe how skinny are those legs? I mean, RBD is OK, but it's sad that Anahi, Dulce Maria and Maite are supporting this unrealistic body image.
Do you think Mattel will EVER change Barbie's body measurements to a more real and healthy standard?

Hello: Concerning the unhealthy image of Barbie doll bodies, I wonder whether you’ve seen the dolls Mattel’s been producing since 1999, the year they introduced the “Belly Button” body. It has a considerably smaller bosom, & more realistically-proportioned waist & hips than does the traditional Barbie body. True, the limbs are still ridiculously skinny. The rbd dolls have that 1999 body, as is obvious from the posture of their hands. I’m chunky-legged, but I’ve always found Barbie’s vavoom torso more problematic.
If you compare the (undressed) bodies of the traditional Barbie doll with the rbd dolls, you’ll see the difference in proportions. As far as stereotypes go, I’d say the excess of blonde dolls is more of a problem than that the fashion dolls have skinny legs. (I’m sick of blondes as the fashion ideal, personally, & yes, I had straw yellow hair as a child). Don’t you think dolls based on Mexican women are a healthy break from the neverending stream of dolls based on blonde chicks?
