The most international of all Colombians, the gorgeous Shakira, has demonstrated once again she's not just a pretty face that sings and dances.
Shakira has attended an event organized by ex- American president Bill Clinton in New York, joined by several world-wide leaders. During the event, Shakira announced a donation of 40 million dollars to help the victims of the earthquake in Peru, and the hurricane in nicaragua
. The money will be used for the reconstruction of the devastated zones. In addition, Shakira has adopted a 3 years commitment with an NGO which works in those two countries in a program to help the children.
The money comes from artists and businessmen, all members of the ALAS Foundation (founded by Shakira and the Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez) and from private companies and nongovernmental organizations.
"I have seen first hand, the challenges faced by Latin America. There are big problems that a single person cannot manage, but working together we can make a difference", assured Shakira.
The ALAS Foundation will assing a total of 5 million dollars to a program dedicated to children in both countries, said Shakira, who didn't give more details about the foundation's plans.
And while her philanthropic and artistic work doesn't stop, Shakira continues with her Ancient History classes in the University of California. Her teacher, professor Robert Cleve, couldn't believe his own eyes when he saw who was one of his pupils. He has stated that Shakira "is just like any other student, she doesn't behave like a big celebrity or something like that".
"I'm very impressed with her intelligence", indicated the lucky professor, who will be able to debate with Shakira about the ancient Greek world.
