If ever there was a time to learn how to pack light, it's now. With gas prices up and on the rise, American Airlines announced a new $15 charge for the first checked bag. That is in addition to the $25 charge for the second bag that they added last year.
Unless gas starts getting cheaper, it would not be surprising for other airlines to follow suit. So it's time to lighten up.
Of course, how light you can keep things depends on the reason for your trip.
Sure, you can pack for 6 months in just your carry-on, if you plan on backpacking through Europe for pleasure.
But traveling for business changes that list. Suddenly a pair of convertible pants may not be space worthy.
I find it amusing that both casual and formal dress lists often include duct tape.
I would also consider where you're going. Some things are indispensable depending on where you'll be.
Here are some handy lists and forum comments:
Mexico
Dominican Republic
Brazil
Galapagos Islands
Perú
