The George Lopez Show Canceled - Race Issues?
Filed in archive Latin Culture , Latin News , Latin Television on May 15, 2007
"The George Lopez Show" has been canceled, without previous notice. "TV just became really, really white again," Lopez said.
He's blaming the cancellation on race issues.
"I get kicked out for a...caveman and shows that I out-performed because I'm not owned by (ABC Television Studios)...So a...Chicano can't be on TV but a...caveman can?" Lopez said. "And a Chicano with an audience already? You know when you get in this that shows do not last forever, but this was an important show and to go unceremoniously like this hurts. One hundred seventy people lost their jobs."
Hum. It's sad to know that so many people have lost their jobs, but unfortunately, that's not unheard of. I'm not really sure "Chicanos can't be on TV" is the reason why the show was canceled. Lopez himself has said Steve McPherson, ABC president of prime-time entertainment, called him over the weekend to explain that "financially" the show wasn't working out, that the network would lose money if it picked up the show again.
Is that really so hard to believe? Five years is not a short life for a sitcom, and "The George Lopez show" wasn't that much successful. Sure, it probably went far than any other Latino show; but I don't think you really can blame the cancellation on "race"; it's at least a doubtful statement.
Anyway, you can always expect to find some really stupid and racist remarks, in this kind of discussion. Look at what this moron have to say, in the comments of TV just got a lot 'whiter', says a canceled George Lopez:
If Lopez can only see himself as a Mexican or Latino he needs to leave the US ASAP. The ONLY reason non-whites have the freedoms and success that they have in the USA is due to the blood, kindness (i say suckerness), compassion, and curiosity of white America.
Non-whites versus white America. Yeah, this kind of stinking thinking will get us far enough, don't you think? Don't you feel sorry for those poor "Mexicans or Latinos" who can only live thanks to the compassion of white Americans?
Not to mention the notion that if you only see yourself as a Mexican or Latino, you shouldn't be in the US. I wonder what the US would be like, if all "non-Latinos" where as compassionate as the author of this comment.

The George Lopez show finally broke through the ceiling that we Hispanics have lived under for centuries. Hispanic families, namely, Mexican-Americans have been living in this country before it was the U.S. Our ancestors have been door mats for too long. George tried to lift up us as something more than drug dealers, gang members, maids, waiters and wetbacks and his show gets canceled without warning and without reason. Hispanics have nothing on TV that represents US. Is that fair, is that the American way? Obviously, it is.
As for Dawn Ross' blog, I am not picking on you, girl, but next time try to spell check your input. You spelled RIDICULOUS wrong. That's how you're supposed to spell it.

Yvette, thanks for your comment. :)
Mark, you're being aggressive, and there's no need to offend people like that. "White people" my a*s! As I've said, I don't know if the show was canceled because of racism, and everybody is entitled to their opinions. But people like you, who thinks they can insult others because they don't share your opinion, just make the world a worst place.
As for George, my friend, please let us know what we can do and how we can do it... to get your show back on.
And for those so concerned about who is what? No, I’m not Latino. I’m just a guy, who loves people. I especially love the warmth I receive from my Latino friends and family (yes, family). Hey, I even learned Spanish!
Los quiero muchisimo! ;)
Marie, let's hope that in the future we'll have other good Latino shows! :)
Maryl, you're so right!
Matt, I believe this is changing. The Latin public is growing so much that is going to be impossible to keep ignoring it.
Panhof, despite your rude tone, that's a very good idea. :)
All I can say is ... WTF!!! SERIOUSLY????
Cancel George L for that show???
I wonder who the actual moron is that came up with that lame idea and such a stupid show.... geeze.
BRING GEORGE BACK! (well, that's if George wants to come back, that is.)
:)
And being that the GL was on for 5 years I feel that ABC should of at least given the GL producers a heads up to at least have a decent send off.
With that said, I can tell you that I never watched the show, & I really never cared too much for George Lopez comedy, that's just me.
As far as Latinos on TV, well there really has not been a strong presence on TV as far as latinos go, I can sit & count show after succesfull show & really not see a latino presence in any of them, or a very limited one at that.
I mean, ER, how long has that show been on the air? you mean to tell me that in their universe no one latino has graduated to become an MD?, there are plenty of Nurses though, I'm not an avid watcher of the show, but I can't recall any. In Smallville, there are no hispanic Superheroes, I love Law & Order, but Damn! I just cant recall one hispanic lawyer, the BAR exam in their timeline must be a Bi*@#, CSI Miami, well let me not even go there but I don't know too many Irish in Miami & I've been to Flanningan's a plenty here in Miami.
What I'm trying to say is that unfortunately the majority of long, succesfull shows, the main players have been, are & who knows if always will be white.
Out of all the networks out there, the one that I can honestly say provides an attempt, to give a platform for hispanics is ABC.
Jimmy Smits was awsome in NYPD Blue, so was Esai Morales, they have a decent hit with Ugly Betty (from a COLOMBIAN Novela...YAY!)Hurley is a main Character on Lost,& they had George Lopez, So I dont think that racism was in any way part of the cancellation, but as I mentioned earlier a proper send off would of been nice.
CBS is making a nice gesture with Cane, but I just don't see this show going far, even with the talented cast they have, but if the show tanks is partly due to A) the writers & B) us latinos for not making an attempt to support a show by hispanics for hispanics.

How racist. The earlier generation of whites where legally beat down to accept this hipocracy...but the new ones are OVER it. Cry the "Race" card, to get a Check, a Job, a passing Grade, or out of Jail and we "know" YOU are the real HATER. Who ever heard of anybody moving to Afro/Latin (non Spanish) Countries for a better Life and Income!!
I just recently watched portions of the HBO George Lopez stand up and my whole image and likeability of him was blown. He was way out of line I thought. I mean I love people of all races. His attitudes and bigotry and basically hatred that he was spewing out really turned me off. I had no idea the man had that much animosity against white people, or Caucasian I like to say. There were a few things I thought were funny in the show, but all in all I thought his attitude was way out in left field and I wondered if it might hurt him professionally as I watched it, and do speculate if his horrible attitudes he displayed did not help contribute to the demise of his show. Attitudes and tirades like his does not help draw people of different races together that's for sure. I mean this is America, a melting pot, we are not all Latino, all white, all black, etc. etc., we are different races all come together in one land. There's nothing wrong with having pride in your heritage and culture, but the horrible things and hatefulness and well, outright racisim he was projecting forth was not good at all, and not funny.
I am an African American woman who absolutely loves the George Lopez show. My ten year old daughter is the one who sold me on the show. I heard her laughing hysterically one night and I just had to see what all the commotion was about. Well the laughter was courtesy of George Lopez. I just find his style of comedy so clever and refreshing. I think any race can relate to disfunction within a family and all the problems and concerns that come with that. I am only sorry that I have only gotten to know the show via Nick at Nite and not sooner. I encourage all the latino and hispanic communities to continue to support your comedians and entertainers. I think times will get better for your race. Just continue to support each other and put out the excellent products, services and shows that you know how to do. I love your race of people and admire you and completely relate to your struggles. Be blessed in the new year and Merry Christmas!
Again, it not about race. Education is the key for any individual or group of people who wish to better themselves.
Race will only be a factor if you allow it to be. There are masses out there who believe that they belong to the middle class, when in fact they are part of the working class. They claim to be superior, and they barely have a high school diploma (if any). You see the trend here? It's not about race people, it is about getting up in the morning diligently to take on the challenges that a school, or college have to offer.
The George Lopez show is one of the most racially insensitive TV shows I can even think of, and just because he's not white nobody dares to call him on it. Anyone can be a racist, including George Lopez. How can he complain about racial discrimination when he tried to make it a laughing matter in his own TV show?
But all the talking abour latinos, white, and blacks..HaHaHa All of you need to leave this country that you can and destroyed. Indians were the first people here and the mexicans were here before the white and now the white wants everybody out? I think the white need to go back where they came from.

GL was good. Ground breaking? IMHO, no. But I liked it.However I don't watch regular tv anymore. I'm more into NPR and listening to Bill Moyers and the BBC news broadcast. Good luck to George Lopez cause he's talented and I'm sure he'll be around a long time.
and they get all mad when they call them WHITE ''hey white boy''look a rich white kid'' they take that offensive for reals and being all bichy get out of our landd!!!
ONE DAY AMERICA IS GONNNA COME TO MEXICO FOR A BETTER LIFE ONE DAYY
and we are not going to be some ignorant assholes like u guys what a bunch of rednecks, honkies, rich ass crakerss, het a fuking taste of ur own medicine fggets life in america is hard especially now in dayss every body is different but u just see us as some dirty imigrants Fuck you...........some mexicans made it to the top becuse it all pays off when u work hard motherfuckers
God I hate him so much I want to throw him in a barrel of gasoline and light his acclaimed "American Mexican" ass and his atrocity of comedy bullshit into a glorious fiery blaze.
Watching him on fire would be less of an eyesore than watching him on television.
You claim that you like him because it puts "cultural diversity" in television. I have no problem with that, I don't hate him because he's mexican. What I do hate about him is that HE ISN'T ENTERTAINING. It wouldn't be so bad if he didn't suck so much cock, figuratively and literally.
Leave the comedy to dave chapelle and carlos mencia.
At least Mencia can officially call himself america's mexican. He doesn't say fuck george bush and glory to mexico and spain, that smug little shit.
Just george lopez in general is annoying. Overly arrogant and insulting to anyone who isn't the same as him. He even insults mexicans who AREN'T racist. He thinks that everything he's on he's gotta announce himself to the cliche'd low rider song. Seriously, get your own theme.
People have no better chance to be themselves and rise in stature ANYWHERE in the world. The US is special and should be protected.
