The Wild Beauty of Cabo Polonio
Filed in archive Latin Travel on November 21, 2006

Cabo Polonio is a small fishing town, 125 miles east of Montevideo, Uruguay. I went there last summer, and I was absolutely Enchanted by it's uncommon characteristics.
The Cabo's wild beauty take over your soul as soon as you approach it. Open trucks transport the visitors from the road, shaking and trembling on the sand paths, among the exuberant wood, to the beach.
After a fun ride of almost 6 miles, you arrive to a paradisiac vision. The blue water breaks in white waves of foam; clear, light golden sand rests quietly under the bright sun.
On the horizon you can see the "ranchos" - rustic small houses, without electric power or running water - sitting over the soft hills, and the elegant silhouette of the lighthouse, mounting guard over the cape.
Cabo Polonio is very different from Punta del Este, the most famous beach of Uruguay. It's a place for relaxing, where you can enjoy life in it's most primitive, natural way.
Scared? Intrigued? I'll tell you more about this unique destination in another post. Stay tunned.
