Real estate investors including Spain's richest man plan to spend $600 million to build an 85-floor office building in Mexico's capital that would be Latin America's tallest skyscraper.

Construction of the 984-foot (300-metre) glass-paneled building overlooking Mexico City's historic Chapultepec Park should be complete by September 2010 to commemorate two centuries since the start of Mexico's war of independence against Spain, the investors said this week

The Torre Bicentenario, or Bicentennial Tower, "will be roughly the same height as the Eiffel Tower in Paris but shorter than the empire state buildinglinks in New York".

Latin America's tallest skyscraper. Just yesterday, I saw on the Discovery Channel a building under construction in the United Arab Emirates, the Burj Dubai, which already is the tallest building on Earth, with over 512mt. It supposedly will have over 800mt. The show also mentioned plans of a building with over 1000mts height.

I don't understand why mankind is always trying to get more and more far from the ground. I love the ground, the Earth under my feet. I like the little towns, where there are few tall buildings blocking the view.

I know, you can stop progress, the modern buildings are beautiful (some of them are just stunning), etc, etc. But I like the idea that Latin America's tallest building is not as high or monstrous as the buildings I saw. One of them will be a "city" for 70.000 people. I don't like the idea, not even a little. Where will be the gardens in that city? Where will be the plazas, the patios, los caminos de tierra? La vecina en el portón?

I couldn't live in a place without those things.
