Undocumented Students Won't Stand a Chance

The "Dream Act", the bill to grant legal status to illegal immigrants who are high school graduates was defeated yesterday in a test vote in the Senate:
By a vote of 52 to 44, the bill failed to garner the 60 votes needed to proceed to a debate on the Senate floor. The bill, sponsored by Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the second-ranking Senate Democrat, would have given provisional legal status to illegal immigrant students who completed high school if they either attended college or served in the military for two years. I guess we can really forget about any major immigration legislation this year. The House will vote today a health care bill for children, which will leave out illegal immigrants, of course.
Latina Lista summarized what we are all thinking:
We must ask ourselves in what direction is this country going and is it a direction we can be proud of?
There's no doubt, the answer is no.
