Uruguay’s Wine Country
If you love wine, you're probably a little more familiar with South America than the average Joe. Argentine, Chile, and Brazil are three of the world's top ten wine producers and exporters. And compared to French, Italian and American wines, the wines of South America tend to cost less for the same quality.
In recent years South America's wine industry has had a new star: Uruguay. The quantity of wine grown there has not yet challenges the three big exporters on the continent. But Uruguay has passed Peru as the fourth largest wine exported in Latin America. And the quality of Uruguay's wines have attracted attention.
Uruguay Wine Tours has a nice map of the country's five wine regions. The Canelones District around the capital city, Montevideo, produces about 60% of the countries wine.
